Technical Specifications
General Product Type: ARCHITECTURAL COATINGS BY SURFACE
Description: Surface architectural coatings are fine aggregate based coatings
that are hand applied onto interior surfaces. The finishes have been custom
developed by Surface Architectural Coatings, to impart simplicity of texture
and integral colour with subtle variations within the application of the multi-stepped
coating.
Material Composition: Non-toxic micronized marble, fine mesh plaster and silica powders with coloured pigments suspended in custom acrylic polymers. The selected components are combined in customized ratios to produce a material that meets aesthetic qualities as well as the functional demands of durability, fade resistance, and handling.
A. Preparation Requirements (by General Contractor)
1. Acceptable substrates to receive Surface architectural coatings include gypsum wallboard, taped and sanded, and given a minimum of one coat of latex primer. An additional top coat of latex paint may be required, depending on final colours selected for the finish. Final colour of latex paint will vary depending on finish and will be determined by Surface upon final selection of approved sample.
2. Additional substrates such as masonry, concrete, plaster and wood are also acceptable, but must be made smooth as above in item 1.
3. All substrates must be dry and dust free prior to application of any coating.
B. Application
1. All products must be installed by a Surface approved contractor or installer. Approved contractors or installers will be responsible for final samples to be approved by the designer. All work must be performed in teams of two or more installers dependent upon size of surface to be covered.
2. Scratch/Base Coat: Mask off areas around the work surface. Skim properly prepared work surface with Surface Scratch Coat using full nap roller and level continuously with steel trowel during roller application to an even thickness and uniformity of aggregates. Allow to dry overnight or a minimum of 4 hours before sanding and application of next step. Final thickness of this scratch coat should be approximately 1mm or less.
3. Finish Coat (x2): Apply Surface Finish Coat material using metal trowel to a flat and true thickness. Let first coat dry a minimum 4 hours before application of next layer. Repeat Finish Coat texture application once again to match sample. Material should dry overnight before removal of any masking tape. Interior and exterior corners and edges must meet a finished quality level during application process.
C. Job Conditions
1. Ambient air temperature shall be 18 degrees C/65 degrees F, or greater to ensure proper surface adhesion and drying of materials. The general contractor shall provide access to electric power and clean potable water at the area where finishes are to be installed.
2. Surface material shall be protected during installation while drying. Drying time: 4-6 hours. Cure time is approximately 7-21 days depending on atmospheric conditions.
